Tottenham Hotspurs` involvement in South African affairs stretches far beyond the field of play with the charity work that the club has undertaken since their last visit in 2007. Their Children`s Village project has seen them built an orphanage in Rustenburg, situated in the North Western part of the country.
Gary Mabbutt, the club`s very well known legend, has now revealed where all the money to carry out this very charitable work comes from, players` fines. “When a player comes late for training or something like that, they are fined.” said Mabbutt, much to the delight and surprise of those present at the pre-tournament press conference to welcome the Londoners.
Maybe the two Soweto giants that are going to meet Spurs on the field of play in the next two weeks might take a leaf out of English club`s book. I hasten to add that we might see a record number of orphanages being built in South Africa……

MY PSL AWARDS
THE “WAKE ME UP WHEN IT`S OVER” AWARD - FOR THE MOST BORING GAME OF THE SEASON
There have been a few boring games. The first game of the season between Bidvest Wits and Supersport United was only saved by the three goals that somehow managed to be scored by the home team. The fact that it was played in a near empty Ellis Park did not help. It was so boring the media did not stick around for the press conference. It was actually torture to the eyes!
However the award goes to Orlando Pirates versus Santos! We had to until around the 73rd minute for a player to hit the ball towards a goalkeeper.It was a very tame shot at the Santos keeper. I do not recall any other shot at goal. I remember commentators standing up to keep from falling asleep on the mic.

MY SA PSL TEAM OF THE SEASON!
The Zambian is a big unit that can walk into many a rugby side.
He does not have the best defence in the league in front of him but he has managed to produce some solid perfomances to keep his side from receiving a lot of huge losses. The shot stopper has chipped in with a penalty or two.
At right back I have decided to go with Happy Jele. I think he has been able to provide an attacking option AND a very solid defensive option for his coach. Only suspensions have seen him being replaced at right back. Towards the end of the season he has managed to come up with two vital goals for Orlando Pirates.
My two central defenders are Valery Nahayo and Tefu Mashamaite who have both have been massive this season, in my humble opinion. Nahayo has a handful of Man of the Match awards to prove me correct. Tefu has led Bidvest Wits excellently this season. His calmness makes him a must for my team.
There is only one man I can put in front of this defence to break down the opposition attacks and start the team`s own attack. Tinashe did not start the season with the rest of the team after his surjoun into the Islam territory.
The two midfielders in front of him need no introduction and they no explanation as to why they are in the team.
I will go with three strikers.

At one point during the season it looked like Krol was just hours away from packing his bags. The dutch coach seemingly took in his orange shirt and put Bucs on a scintillating 17 game unbeaten streak. Foppe De Han turned down an offer to go back to his home country, opting instead to guide a very young outfit in displaying the most exciting brand of football of the season. After watching their first couple of games I honestly thought Celtic were going to be fighting the relegation battle this season. If one takes into account the resources that Clinton Larsen has at his disposal compared to the likes of Ajax, Pirates, Chiefs and Sundowns then for my money, Clint deserves to win this award.

Gorowa Gets Coach Of The Month Award.
Sundowns` Zimbabwean coach Gorowa, has orchestrated the Brazilians’ recent remarkable revival and has led the Pretoria side to within reach of the Absa Premiership trophy. As a result, he was unanimously voted Absa Premiership Coach of the Month.
Gorowa walked away with R10 000, courtesy of Absa Card, and 4 “Absa Dreambags” filled with football equipment, which he can donate to a school of their choice.
Thulani Serero, who has been in dazzling form and has been instrumental in helping the Cape Town outfit go to the summit of the Absa Premiership table, was named Player
of the Month. His impressive goal-scoring rate for the Urban Warriors has also seen the young striker-cum-midfielder break into the national team. One of the members of the judging panel went as far as to label Serero as “South Africa’s own version of Lionel Messi”.
There was much deliberation to determine the Absa Premiership Coach of the Month.
Although Gorowa eventually took the spoils, he was run close by Foppe de Haan, the Absa Premiership Coach of the Month for the February voting period. The Zimbabwean mentor however, received the highest number of votes for sparking Sundowns’ recent revival and for leading the Brazilians through an impressive unbeaten run, which included the memorable draw with Ajax.
“Gorowa has arrested his team’s downward spiral and now the Brazilians seem to have hit top gear again. During the voting period, Sundowns picked up three wins and a draw and they look much more purposeful these days” said one of the judging panel members.
Gorowa also received plaudits for improving his side’s goal scoring tally. During the voting period Sundowns scored 10 goals in the four games they played as they remain unbeaten in the league fixture. The Zimbabwean`s caretaker manager tenure comes to end with close of the current season. Speculation is still rife as to whether DeBango will stay on as The Brazilians` manager.

WHERE DOES WEDNESDAY NIGHT LEAVE THE SA PSL?
Before Wednesday, I was of the opinion that the winner of the match between Mamelodi Sundowns and Ajax Cape Town would have a very distinct advantage in the title race. I even mentioned on a local radio station that the last thing we wanted was a draw. Lo and Behold, we not only got a draw but we got eight goals to go with it! While the rich ones and the warriors from Cape were exchanging net busters, Orlando Pirates was nailing Moroka Swallows to the Play Offs cross. Kaizer Chiefs were busy huffing and puffing themselves out of contention, the point might still give their millions of supporters some hope, mathematical hope!
The Sundowns coach was caught in the middle of being happy and disappointed. Happy that his team had fought back from 4 - 1, disappointed that his charges had put themselves in that position in the first place. The Ajax thought that inexperience was to blame for his side not being able to hold on to such a commanding lead. I agree with him.
So where does this leave the log and where will the trophy be stationed on the final day of the season? I think only three teams are in it. Chiefs seem to have left themselves with too much to do in the final four games. It is no longer in their hands. They need other teams to be losing whilst they are winning, this recipe does not always work. In fact Chiefs must now watch out for those Singing Siwelele bunch!

Orlando Pirates once went 16 or 17 games without a loss so it is highly unlikely they will do the rich ones any favours by losing two out four games. However this is soccer and it is the final push to the 2011 PSL league title, so slips up are inevitable. BLUNDERING SUNDOWNS PIP ARROWS.
The final score of 3-2 in favour of Mamelodi Sundowns might fool you into thinking that this was a close game. Sundowns controlled this game from start to finish. In fact all five goals can be credited to Abafana be Style.
In searing of Pretoria, it was the home team that started the stronger with prodical son Katlego Mpela getting a chance to open the scoring as early as the first minute. Method Mwanjale did some good work defensively and fed the skillful Pelembe who in turn found Killer with a brilliant pass. The striker`s shot was just wide. The Sundowns supporters that were present at the stadium adopted the Siwelele style of singing and dancing and so were in full voice which was good to see.
The two teams traded free kicks in the early in the match with Sundowns having the bulk of the possession with Pelembe having his way with the Arrows midfielders and defence. Abafana Be sitende were given reprieve by the heat as the referee called for a water break in the 23rd minute. After that Mamelodi Sundowns lost a lot of their fluidity and the pace of the game dropped considerably. It was a rather dull affair until a breath taking passing move produced the first goal of the match. I am afraid that without the aid of a diagram I cannot describe the build up to the goal just before the break. What I can tell you is that Method Mwanjale was very heavily involved and was the man who was handed the task of beating the Golden Arrows goalkeeper at the end of it all. A task which the Zimbabwean completed with great aplomb.
Siyabonga Nkosi did not take part in the half time talk as he was sent out to warm up as the crowd was introduced to the 2011 Miss Sundowns. The Bafana Bafana(I`m sure we can still use that name) was put in at the start of the second half by Zoran Filipovic but he could only watch as captain Esrom Nyandoro sent prodigal son Mpela through for the second goal. The crowd had cried for the midfielder to shoot and maybe the Arrows also expected a shot at goal but the wryly campaigner opted for the pass and it paid handsome dividends. Arrows did have their chances with Songwe Chalwe coming close on a couple of occasions. The extremely bulky Collins Mbesuma gave the singing supporters a few nervy moments but the game was firmly in the home team`s hands with that man Pelembe giving them more reasons to raise the volume.
Young Mutizwa limped off in the 58th which afforded Teko Modise the chance to of a much needed run in Sundowns colours. However he had to wait a while on the touchline as first Eduardo Ferreira then Wayne Sandilands went down with injuries. Golden Arrows` Mancana, who had come on to good effect, closed down Sibusiso Khumalo as he took his time to play the ball out so that the Sundowns goalkeeper could get medical help. The injured Sandilands had to get up and make a very brave save at the feet of Chalwe. Poetic justice was served as the very same Mancana handled in the box minutes later, giving Katlego Mpela the perfect opportunity to grab his brace. This time Teko Modise led the celebratory corner flag dance.
Mamelodi Sundowns then went into cruise mode, stroking the ball around and threatening the Arrows goal at regular interval. Thukasizwe Khuzwayo did a marvelous job of keeping the scoreline at only one nil. The points looked safe until the 81st minute. A harmless looking shot from that man Mbesuma deflected of a defender and looped over a helpless Wayne Sandilands for what looked at the time to be a consolation goal. Barely a minute later an equally harmless cross by Njabulo Mancana was spectacularly deflected into his on own net by substitute Thapelo Tshilo. The singing turned into swearing and whistling. Then Papi Zothwane almost did his former employers a favour with a horrendous back pass which Xulu failed to control giving that man with more weight problems than our Benny a clear sight on goal. DERBY, SHE IS A DRAW!
Yet again the Ghost was outnumbered by the peace loving Amakhosi by far. In fact the Pirates had to look around the stadium for their followers before they could perform the traditional salute. It was the well supported Kaizer Chiefs that kicked off the Golden Derby and it was the team in black and gold that enjoyed more of the possession in the opening moments of the match. It took all of thirty seconds for Chiefs to get the first free kick of the game, a minute later Pirates were also awarded a free kick. Both set pieces were wasted. In a very frustrating opening stanza for the Bucs, the midfield duo of Andile Jali and Isaac Chansa kept on losing possession with rather unusual wayward passing. Ruud Kroll told the press that they had spent the past week talking about not allowing the Chiefs` full backs to overlap and put in crosses. His players were obviously not listening or it could be they are still not used to his Dutch accent. Whatever it was, the men in white went to sleep in the eleventh minute and the overlapping Tau sent in a cross which was met by the much maligned Kaizer Motaung Jnr. First Blood Chiefs! The noise that greeted the goal could be heard in the surrounding cities.
The staging of a U2 concert in the world cup stadium did not help the derby as the pitch looked awful. As Mr Krol put it after the match, “A top match needs a top pitch and today the pitch was not top”. The pitch had nothing to do with Katlego Mashego hitting the ball across the goal when a pass could have resulted in an easy tap in for an unmarked Isaac Chansa. The Zambian let his greedy teammate know that he was less than impressed with him. In the 25th minute we had the first of two Pitch Fix breaks. Chiefs continued to see more of the ball, aided by those poor passing Pirates midfieders. The two Amakhosi central defenders had an easy time shutting down the isolated Mashego. National asset, Simpiwe Tshabalala looked like he was going to score a photocopy of that famous world cup goal until Oupa Manyesa spoilt the moment with a very good block.

He obviously did not see Damon running towards the 18 area with his left hand pointing to the sky. It was ruled offside. Jele got off his knees and made sure the assistant referee knew that he got it that one wrong, brandishing a finger at the party spoiling official. Chiefs were now playing the Hoof and Hope type of football as the Bucs boys sensed blood. The Amakhosi bench started ringing in the time consuming substitutes with Tshabalala limping off instead of using the much faster stretcher. Yende replaced him and Musona was pulled out for Abia Nale. Orlando Pirates and Thulasizwe Mbuyane in particular have a made a tradition of scoring goals very late in games this season. Deep into injury time, with the Amakhosi PRO and 85 000 fans already celebrating, Mbuyane rose to head home a Ndumiso Mabhena cross. The noise levels broke through the sound barrier as The Ghost had the last laugh and celebrated the draw as if it was their biggest win of the season. Even the coach had to be corrected by his counterpart after calling the result a win. Man of the match, Khune was inconsolable as he made his way to the interview area. It might as well have been a loss!

If my rich neighbours lose, then winning the Nedbank Cup will be their hope of silverware this season. I can tell you that I am looking forward to at least one red card and a lot of oohs and aahs. The “ No Smoking inside the stadium” rule will be broken over and over and over again in this fixture. The community of the Mother City love their puffs! The smoke will deter Ajax from running at the stubborn Santos defence in search of bragging rights and the small matter of three points that will keep them in touch with those Gauteng teams above them. Ajax are starting to look like the real deal and Santos are going about their business as steadily as only “The People`s team” can. Do not expect a lot goals in this one.

Those singing fans will be hoping for more of the same from Spandeel and company! The passion is there, the hunger is there! On recent form the Siwelele should be able to sing all the way back to the Free State with three points in the bag. I can , however tell you that it is not easy to get points from the s`thende boys these days. Those long balls to Paulse will have to be very accurate if Celtic are to get joy out of their Durban trip. Of course they must watch out for that rather stocky Zambian arrow!

I wonder if the Dube Birds` supporters will striker and hit the gates again if the team loses this one. These supporters celebrated like they`d won the Mainstay Cup when they got a win at Wits but such is the nature of football, they now find themselves on the brink of another vocal strike. The club has gone deep into the Sundowns` reservior of players to try and beef up the squad. This game is what we call a six pointer in football circles and whoever loses can start looking forward to the relegation playoffs!

PLATINUM STARS vs KAIZER CHIEFS
Stars will be playing in front of the biggest crowd they have had for a home game all season. About twenty of them will be their own backers. By the time this game kicks off the Amakhosi will be knowing how points they will be needing in this game and the re arranged one during the week. They will have the result of the Bucs and Downs match. This can prove to be a distraction and it will be up to Platinum Stars to capitalise and silence the peace loving, loud supporters.

Those Clever Boys from the university in Johannesburg gave Vasco team a reality check of the highest order. Just to remind us all that the Cricket World Cup is upon us, Wits hit Vasco for six! This is the time to show their mettle and arise from their fall and score six of their own against a team low on points. Whatever happened to that team that beat Pirates and Swallows?!?? Vasco could also capitalise on the very short tempered group of players being assembled by the bald headed one. These players that have not been seeing a lot action, a lot of pent up frustration.

Musona Scoops Player Of The Month Award
KNOWLEDGE SCOOPS THE PLAYER OF THE MONTH AWARD
Johannesburg- Orlando Pirates coach Ruud Krol and Knowledge Musona of Kaizer Chiefs have emerged as the two big winners as the respective Absa Premiership Coach of the Month and Absa Premiership Player of the month for the December and January period.
The announcement was made at the Premier Soccer League offices in Parktown.
Knowledge Musona got the nod as the Absa Premiership Player of the month after scoring some crucial goals for Amakosi during the voting period. His efforts in front of goal have kept Chiefs in the title race and he has shown a knack of scoring crucial goals when it matters. He most notably rescued a point for Chiefs in Bloemfontein when a goal in injury time gave them a share of the spoils. His goal ratio in December was equally impressive and he kept on scoring vital goals.
“He is a true predator in front of goal, but he has also set up a number of goals for his teammates. He has become a real team player and that should be truly celebrated”, said one of the judging panel.
But it was a close run affair: Lehlohonolo Majoro of Amazulu was equally impressive as he plundered some crucial goals during the judging period while Thulani Serrero of Ajax Cape Town was at the heart of the Urban Warriors charge towards the top of the league table.
Steward Masela, Absa Sponsorship Manager, congratulated the respective winners. “Well done to everyone. The current Absa Premiership season has turned out to be one of the most exciting ever and we have seen some extraordinary performances. This only adds to what I am sure will be an exciting end to the season”
Premier Soccer League CEO, Kjetil Siem, also added his congratulations.
“I’ve been impressed by the quality of football and individual performances that we have seen up until now in the Absa Premiership. The monthly winners are certainly doing the League, their clubs as well as themselves proud and I must thank Absa for providing exciting incentives,” said the Norwegian.
At this rate the young Zimbabwean will a bigger room to keep all his awards!

IAN GOROWA NAMED CARETAKER COACH
In a dramatic turn of events,Zimbwabwean Ian Gorowa has taken over the reigns at glamour club Mamelodi Sundowns as caretaker coach. After months as the visible second in command Gorowa was thrust into the role of head coach after the resignation of Antonio Habas on Saturday morning.
Ian Gorowa is no stranger to the job of head coach as he has coached Moroka Swallows before. Mr Gorowa is the first Zimbabwean coach to take over at the Chloorkop based club. At the time of the change of regime Sundowns find themselves seating in fourth place on the PSL log. The club having come from a 2 nil win away to Moroka Swallows with fellow countryman Nyasha Mushekwi and Method Mwanjali finding the net. Mwanjali`s goal was something to savour as the national captain ran a full half football pitch before unleashing a low left footed shot that gave the goalkeeper no chance. Mushekwi`s goal was the sixth of the season as he has now become the number one striker after the disappearance of Katlego Mphela. Nyasha is now hot on the heels of red hot countryman, Knowledge Musona who is out injured. Mushekwi has now scored six goals compared to Musona`s ten.

BIDVEST WITS TOO CLEVER FOR DEFENDING CHAMPS.
Kermit Eramus looked like he was either in prayer or planning something just before kick off. Just to see if his prayer had been answered, the diminutive striker tried to beat the Wits goalkeeper straight from the kick off. The audacious shot was high and wide.
This game was moved from the Lucas Morepe Stadium to the much larger Loftus Stadium making it look like the game had been ordered to be played behind closed doors.
The first three minutes produced much better football than the whole ninety minutes of the first round match between these two sides. Bidvest Wits enjoyed the bulk of the possession with quick passes and some good flank play. De Sa`s decision to start Myeni in central midfielder instead of his usual position out on the left seemed to be paying off as he caused a lot distress for the United midfield and defense. There is a reason why Morgan Gould played the ball straight to the feet of first timer Bongolethu Jeyayi to skip past Rowan Fernandez and slot the ball into an empty net. Only Morgan knows why he played the ball to an opposition player. Gavin Hunt mentioned after the match that his team has been doing this all season.
The Students were all over the defending champions, at one point earning three consecutive corners. One of these corners surprised all as it kept low and crept past the defense and Fernandez needed two takes to get the ball under his control. United then went on the attack which ended with a foot save from Keet. Dipsy Sololoane bringing the best out of the keeper with a low left footed shot. Kurt Erasmus made life easy for the Wits goalkeeper with a very weak header on 27 minutes. George Maluleke did beat Keet with a ferocious shot from a free kick in the 30th minute but the crossbar was having none of it! The flaying Kleet was hit by the ball on the rebound, luckily for him it went out for a throw in. A few minutes later Myeni released the debutant with a delicious through ball, the young man took two touches and beat an advancing Fernandez for his second of the night. His coach later joked that every time they had given a young man a chance, they had done well. “We will have to find one for the next match.” the coach laughed.
Rodger did not spend the second half laughing or smiling as Supersport came out fighting and firing. Their pressure told as they pulled one back through a debutant of their own. Hartog had come on to replace the injured Mario Booysens late in the first half and found himself at the end of a Erasmus cross putting the ball past Keet with a wonderful diving header. From that point on it was wave after wave of Supersport attacks but Wits held on with Keet doing his bit to keep the score positive for his team.
George Maluleke had a few free kicks to try and change the fortunes of his club but decided on using the rugby system of scoring. This meant that Bidvest Wits could collect a very valuable three points.

A LOOK INTO THE CHRIS-tal BALL
After witnessing one for THE most boring games in the Chris-tal Ball`s long life last Saturday night, we can only look forward to better performances this Wednesday as all sixteen teams take to the field once again!

SANTOS vs VASCO DA GAMA
The People`s team is in fifth place as it usually is around this time of the season. They defend and then hit the opposition with a sucker punch right near the end of the game, leaving the other team with no time to recover. Vasco, on the hand, are a hard running team with a couple of proficient strikers. So, dear reader, will Santos defend and wait for their opportunity against a team that can spend 93 minutes attacking? If you answered yes then you have obviously forgotten that those pointless Arrows were beaten by three goals to one by this very same Santos squad. My dear reader have gone about there business very intelligently. Mr Solomons clearly knows which matches will get him three points and which ones will not. Vasco will not show any respect to the People less team, they have not shown any respect to any team since arriving on the scene. This is a match that can actually turn out to be worth the 40 rand Dr Khoza and company expect you all to fork out for some rather sub standard football!

BLOEMFONTEIN CELTIC vs MAMELODI SUNDOWNS
The Singing Siwelele will give the Stylish Ones a good run for their millions! I can tell you that Botha and that huge choir of theirs will be singing their lungs out for the three points. On the pitch the players just need to make sure the ball in the net at least twice before the rich Downs bench start making substitutions. Sundowns` bench has proved to be very potent in changing the outlook of a game. Just ask the Team Of Choice who managed a whole half without conceding only end up with their goalie picking up the ball from net three times in the second half!
SUNDOWNS WIN.
SUPERSPORT UNITED vs FREE STATE STARS
The Champs will look this match and see nothing but a victory. A few weeks ago they would have seen only a fight to get a draw out of this match. If Steve Khompela has to use his command of the queen`s language to give a victory speech then someone at Supersport might resign or be fired! The team that was in the sick bay has joined the rest of the squad on the field of play so there really should be no excuse for failing to add three points to the small number of points Matsatsantsa have collected so far.

Both these teams lost over the weekend. It was not necessarily because they played badly but it was just that their opponents scored more goals than both of them did. The Not So Clever Boys dished up the second worst performance of the weekend. I do not see them improving. However they are up against a team that might actually let them think they`ve improved! I must confess I even forget who plays for Platinum Stars sometimes. This match presents the rich team from the North West with a very good chance to collect a valuable three points. Roger De Sar has promised to rid himself of some of the non performing students this month. I do not see any of them changing his mind!

I remember when Aces flew over the Dube Birds. That was before AmaZion decided that three coaches per season were better than one. Igusend will use all those borrowed players to put Aces to the sword on Wednesday. Nothing happening in Mpumalanga suggests that they will upset any team again this season, but that coach of theirs might provide some entertainment IF he will allowed to sit on the bench by the Department Of Home Affairs.

Sundowns` bench has proved to be very potent in changing the outlook of a game. The Champs will look this match and see nothing but a victory. A few weeks ago they would have seen only a fight to get a draw out of this match.
